Kerala’s trial court verdict in the 2017 sexual assault case against actor Dileep has stirred strong reactions across the Malayalam film industry. On Monday, actor and filmmaker Parvathy Thiruvothu took to Instagram to express her heartbreak and frustration.
“We watch a carefully crafted screenplay unfold so cruelly now,” wrote Parvathy, who is also a founding member of the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC). However, the response from the industry’s women was more personal and passionate. Actors Rima Kallingal and Remya Nambeesan shared messages of support on social media, using the campaign hashtag ‘Avalkoppam’ (We stand with her), which was launched by WCC following the 2017 assault.
Rima wrote, “Always. More stronger than ever now.”
The Women in Cinema Collective, formed in November 2017, has been at the forefront of advocating for a safe, professional, and non-discriminatory environment for women in the Malayalam film industry. Ahead of the verdict, the WCC reflected on the long struggle for justice, noting: “This has not been an easy journey. The journey of being a victim to becoming a survivor. 3,215 days of waiting for justice.”
In a statement, WCC also highlighted the larger impact of the case. “Her fight has unleashed many tumultuous journeys for women in cinema, the Malayalam film industry, and the state of Kerala. The impact has rippled through our collective conscience, and voices have risen for change.”
The collective praised the courage and resilience of the survivor recognising her faith in the system despite the immense challenges. “Much has to be said for the courage and resilience she has shown through it all, while upholding her faith in the system,” WCC noted.
On February 17, 2017, a Malayalam actress was abducted and sexually assaulted inside a moving vehicle near Angamaly by a gang that also filmed the crime, shocking Kerala. Actor Dileep was accused of masterminding the attack.
Parvathy Thiruvothu recalls a shocking childhood incident when a stranger hit her on the chest. She opens up about how such experiences left a lasting impact on her life and shaped her understanding of safety.
